PASSPORT NAMES – INDIA – UAE- RULES AND AMENDMEDTS

The United Arab Emirates on November 21, 2022 has amended its travel guidelines which mandated passengers entering the country to fill in their full names on their passports. Any passport holder with a single-word name — either in the ‘given name’ or ‘surname’ column of their passport — will be considered as an ‘inadmissible passenger’ (INAD) and will not be granted entry into the country by immigration officers. This is applicable to tourists now and can be applicable to future residents.  For example, a traveller can no longer enter a single name, such as ‘Kiran’, in either the ‘given name’ or ‘surname’ columns of his passport. It will be deemed invalid. A name such as ‘Kiran Prasad’, however, will be acceptable. ‘Kiran Prasad ’ may be entered as the given name, as the surname, or with ‘Kiran’ as the given name and ‘Prasad’ as the surname. These formats will be accepted. According to the rule that came into effect on 21st November 2022, which has now been amended, passengers with visiting visas or visas on arrival were to clearly declare both their first and last names on their passports.   Air India was the first airline to have sent out a notice saying that “any passport holder with a single name (word) either in surname or given name will not be accepted by UAE immigration and the passenger will be considered as INAD" — a term which stands for inadmissible passenger. Such passenger will not be issued a visa and in case the visa was issued previously then he will be INAD by immigration.  However, due to the chaos gained among the community, the authorities amended the Rules and hence the Consulate General of India, Dubai clarified that passengers with only one name will be granted entry if they have their father/family’s name mentioned on the second page of their passports.  According to the amended guidelines, passengers with only one name will be granted entry if they have their father/family’s name mentioned on the second page of their passports. It also says passengers with only one name will be eligible for visa on arrival (VoA) if they have their father’s name or family name on the second page
