Dubai’s New Rules for Medical Ads on Social Media

If you operate a health facility, work as a licensed doctor, or promote medical services on social media in Dubai, there are important new rules you must follow. The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has introduced stricter standards for medical advertising on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. The goal is simple: to protect patients from misleading promises, exaggerated claims, and unnecessary medical procedures.

Let’s look at what is allowed, what is banned, and how to keep your practice compliant.

1. Banned Words and Exaggerated Claims: Under the new DHA guidelines, medical advertisements can no longer use absolute or hype-driven words. Patients must receive realistic, evidence-based information rather than marketing spin.

Words you can NO longer use in ads: "100%" or "Guaranteed success", "The best" or "The only", "Safest", "Magical" or "Miracle", "No side effects", "Instant / Immediate results"

Prohibited claims include:

  • Claiming a doctor has a "secret ingredient" or "exclusive skill" that no one else has.
  • Suggesting a treatment never fails.
  • Claiming your clinic or doctor is superior or safer than others without concrete proof.

2. Marketing Tactics to Avoid: The new standards also target pushy or fear-based sales techniques that exploit patient anxiety.

  • No Fear Marketing: You cannot create panic or make people fear they have a serious or contagious illness just to sell a treatment or test.
  • No Unrealistic Beauty Promises: Slogans like "Don't delay," "Get the look you want," or "Look better and feel more confident" are banned if they create unrealistic expectations.
  • No Pushing Unnecessary Services: Ads must not encourage over-use or random consumption of medical procedures.

3. Important Rules for Content and Approvals: Whether you use external influencers, internal staff, or featured doctors, the responsibility stays with the health facility.

  • Medical Director Approval: Any promotional post mentioning the clinic's name or location—whether posted by doctors, employees, or influencers—must be approved in writing by the Medical Director before posting.
  • Facility Liability: The clinic is legally responsible for all photo and video content shot inside its premises, even if filmed on a personal mobile phone.
  • Patient Privacy and Photos: You cannot post photos, videos, or reviews from patients without signed, written consent that clearly details how and how long the content will be used.

Your next steps as Healthcare Providers:

  1. Review Existing Content: Audit your social media profiles and remove posts that use banned words like "100%" or "Guaranteed."
  2. Update Patient Consent Forms: Ensure your photo/video consent forms explicitly state where content will be posted and for how long.
  3. Establish an Approval Process: Implement an internal process where all social media content is signed off by your Medical Director prior to publishing.
